Tutorial 60: Destroying Text with Forge Dynamics in Cavalry
This tutorial has a little bit of everything:
- Text Animation with Auto Animate
- Forge Simulation
- Body Collision Events
- Creating Collisions with another object
One thing that I love about the technique that I shown you, is that it is very easy to set up, super impactful and you can spend hours playing with different settings.
Crashing into Text with Bodies
Crashing into Text Layers is pretty much the same as the method as I covered before in this tutorial. Simply use Kinematic Body for the “crusher” – in my case Ball. And other Bodies in Forge Dynamics can stay as Dynamic. Make sure to use Body Density to your advantage – “crushers” should be heavier, than bodies that they crash into. This way you can push them away much easier and they will require less force, create bigger “blast” radius and so on. Start Asleep – this little setting lets you create an illusion of a “live” text, while keeping copy in Forge Simulation. Simple cut does the job to blend between 2 systems – animated text and Forge Sim.
Markers and Layers In and Out Points
I only briefly “ventured” into this territory, but in Cavalry you can create a lot of responsive templates and systems, by linking them with Markers. There are a lot of settings that you should read about on Cavalry’s Docs Page.
In the tutorial, I used single Marker to:
- Set Text Layer Out
- Set Forge Layer In
- Set Forge Layer Simulation Start Time
All these 3 properties were controlled with 1 marker. Super easy to adjust and keep things in sync, while you are exploring your setup.
Small Changes = Big Results
Below you can see 4 examples of the same Text animation with a Forge Simulation. All of them produce vastly different results, just by changing few properties, adding animated crushing body (ball) or a field. Even changing the shape of a crushing body has a big effect on the final look. I used Ball and a Triangle for last 2 examples.
This is only scratching the surface with what is possible. Have fun!
This project file contains all the assets necessary to make animation in the tutorial in final form. Everything is labeled, linked, with expressions and ready to use, if you wish to make your own version or just play around with it.
If you have any suggestions for tutorials or how I can improve, please do get in touch. I would love to hear from you.
