Tutorial 68: LayerCake Script for Cavalry

Export every single layer from Cavalry Composition, one at a time. This makes it super easy to composite stuff in Nuke, After Effects, Premiere Pro and other software of your choice. All of it can be done with pretty much 1 click, once you add Composition to your Render Manager.

How it works?

LayerCake “scans” your composition and finds all the layers that are:

  • Visible – not “turned off” with the Eye On icon
  • Only on the first “level” – it ignores deep nesting of parents with children and grand-children and so on
  • It ignores all the Utility, Math layers

Then it renders them all, one at a time. That’s it. You can create your animations, use Duplicators, Forge Dynamics etc and this script will render each layer as it’s own single file.

How to set it up?

First, instal it in your Cavalry Scripts folder, or follow official instructions from Cavalry developers. Once you have it installed, simply open it and you can dock it in a side panel if you wish.

Next, add compositions you want to render to the Render Manager. Then specify:

  • Destination
  • File Format
  • Ignore file name as this script will overwrite it
  • Make sure Dynamic Render is OFF
  • Render Manager Scripts have no scripts preset or it may result in an error, or LayerCake will wipe them
  • Add Composition to the Compositions Tab, if you haven’t done it yet

One you have your animation done and above steps completed, click Render Separate Layers button.

Next?

LayerCake will:

  • Scan your composition for visible layers only
    • Only top level – no children or grand-children will be used
    • Skip all the utility, math layers etc
    • Only layers with Position data are used
  • Count them
  • Capture their names
  • Set Render File Name to Layer Name
  • Hide each layer and turn them on one at a time for each render
  • One render is done, it will restore original layer visibility

Limitations

In the Cavalry 2.7.2, I can’t access Render “toggle ON/OFF” checkbox in Render Manager. If you have multiple jobs, this script will render them all. Alternatively, you can SELECT job you want to render, THEN click on the Render Separate Layers button.

I tested this script with complex setups and so far it worked well. More complex renders may take time, as this script runs one render at a time, for each layer in the composition.

Get Project File From Gumroad

This project file contains all the assets necessary to make animation in the tutorial in final form. Everything is labeled, linked, with expressions and ready to use, if you wish to make your own version or just play around with it.
