Tutorial 48: Simple Lower 3rd Template Design
I really like setting up things like lower 3rds rigs. One template and you can easily render hundereds of copies. Before you start rigging anything, try and plan your motion or how you want your text and elements to behave. At the beggining of the video, I walked you through a simple planning process, which made the setup much easier.
Layouts
Layouts are super useful, when you want to “pack” multiple elements together. They are super helpful, when you want to position things around the screen and dynamically resize, as needed. One thing that was a small “ahaa” moment for me was in Layout > Advanced tab > Horizontal / Vertical Alignment. This setting lets you position layers on left / middle / right side of the screen. And top / middle / bottom. By combing it with Layout Group spacing settings, you can easily position your rig in bottom left corner, as an example.
This little “trick” saved me a lot of headaches, as I didn’t have to calculate shape position “manually” with multiple math nodes. Cavalry handled it all by itself.
Spreadsheets
Utilise spreadsheets, if you are dealing with lots of data. In the tutorial, I have shown you how you can join multiple spreadsheet rows together. Formatted String Generator is the “heavy lifter” here and lets you join strings together.
Additionally, for trully dynamic template, utilise Dynamic Render with Formatted String to craete unique file names. This takes no time to setup and saves so much time. You can easily export lots of videos with uniqe file names. Note that if you won’t setup dynamic file names with Render Tokens, then Cavalry will overwrite existing file names.
Flexibility
Below you can see example of the same template, but with different copy. Notice that animation takes exactly the same amount of time, looks and feels the same. Trully dynamic template will adapt to your copy and will allow you to focus on important stuff. I prefer to focus on polishing animation, rather than adjusting individual text layers, because copy changes from video to video.
This project file contains all the assets necessary to make animation in the tutorial in final form. Everything is labeled, linked, with expressions and ready to use, if you wish to make your own version or just play around with it.
If you have any suggestions for tutorials or how I can improve, please do get in touch. I would love to hear from you.
