Tutorial 49: Responsive Text Templates in Cavalry

Building text template does not have to be difficult. Main “driver” of this whole setup is Measure Text. This tool will giev you dimensions of your string. And we can use it to offset text up or down (in our example) and animate it with Auto Animate. And we are done 🙂

The more I use Auto Animate, the more I like it. In the past I would setup individual keyframes and falloffs for Position / Scale / Opacity. But Auto Animate does it all in one Behaviour + offsets multiple delay options, too.

String Data

I like to use and re-use data within Cavalry. For example, String Length tool can easly help us blend Text Colours or change animation Seed value. Simple little step ensures that we have variation between animations. It’s a small detail, but can go long way. For example, in the tutorial we used String Length to affect Random Time Offset and Colour of accent shapes.

Math

One tip I picked up a while ago is to use Math > Multiply to add extra “padding” to values. For example

  • Value 100
  • Multiply by 1.2
  • Result is 120

Essentially, we have value that is equal to 120% of the “base value”. This is simple way to increase baseline values by small percentage. Also, it goes “other way around”. For example:

  • Value 100
  • Multiply by 0.2
  • Result is 20

Pretty simple and straight forward way to use baseline data to add padding to Text Matte or Distance of Auto Animate and so on.

Get Project File From Gumroad

This project file contains all the assets necessary to make animation in the tutorial in final form. Everything is labeled, linked, with expressions and ready to use, if you wish to make your own version or just play around with it.
