Tutorial 51: 3 New Custom Cavalry Filters
This is not a tutorial, but rather a quick overview of 3 new filters I created. They let you do a lot of cool effects within Cavalry. To instal new filters, make sure to follow instructions in Docs page here.
Below, is a short feature list of each one of them, few examples and link to Gumroad page, where you can download them.
Mosaik
This filter is very similar to Pixelate. The main difference is that you can control effect of “pixelisation” based on number of Rows and Columns, rather than Pixel Size. For example, 20 x 30 grid. Or 10 x 100. It is possible to do it, animate in-between states with keyframes and behaviours and more.
One more feature of this Filter is Stroke Size + Colour. You can easily create a small, or big, outline of each “pixel”. It’s pretty cool, if you want to style your assets this way 🙂 No need for creating vectors with Duplicators, when you can do it directly inside one filter.
Kolorama
This filter is similar to Gradient Map. By using colours in a Gradient, we can easily map then to Shadows, Mids and Highlights for stylistic effects. Main difference between Kolorama and Gradient Map, is that you can now animate Phase and Number of Cycles.
Phase animates the colours across Gradient. It “loops” them, without need for any complex setups. You can animate it with keyframes or Noise or Oscillator or … it’s up to you 🙂
Cycles allows for “looping of Gradient Map” within itself. For example, if you have 3 colours – red, yellow, blue. By setting 2 cycles, you can “loop” the colours in a final gradient to red, yellow, blue, red, yellow, blue. Higher cycles number = more looped colours.
Opacity allows you to simply fade or switch the filter on or off.
Kaleidoscopter
This is the most fun and weird filter. Simply, you get to make a kaleidoscopic effect. I put together 10 different ways of making a kaleidoscopic effect. From “classic” multi image fold, to more weird one like glass or square. You should explore them on your own as each of them contain different controllers and can produce some subtle and unique effects.
This project file contains all the assets necessary to make animation in the tutorial in final form. Everything is labeled, linked, with expressions and ready to use, if you wish to make your own version or just play around with it.
If you have any suggestions for tutorials or how I can improve, please do get in touch. I would love to hear from you.
