It started with 3 basic sketches

I worked as a part of a team on a new Digital Proposition for UBS. I can’t showcase POC app we proposed, but I can talk about my portion of the final video created.

Original client’s sketches

The video request came in from client in the following format:

It would be cool if we could do some sort of short animated conversation starter for our Townhall in 2 weeks. Can you help us please?

After short conversation, we dotted down ideas and client send over 3 sketches as a general direction, which I used as a starting point to all the work.

From sketch to final design

On this project, I was working as a part of team consisting of 2 x Motion Graphics artists, UI designer and Project Manager. Whole team was based in NY, while I was in London, UK at the time.

This gave us some challenges in terms of scheduling meetings, as we had to get all the calls done during our “common working hours”. But it also meant, we had nearly 24/7 production going on. Team in NY would focus on designing a Proof of Concept payment app, while I would work on principal animation, which was further split between myself and second animator.

Since the deadline was around the corner, I worked on fleshing out designs over a number iterations, as you can see in the Before / After comparisons. You can see how they progressed from initial sketches, to typography / graphical layouts to more complex designs. We settled in at the end on a text and icon based approach, while using grey and dark colours and limiting use of colour, only as accent.

Simple and snappy

Whole design and animation was created to be simple and snappy. Proof of Concept app was still under development and prototyping, so this video was used as a discussion starting point at internal Townhall.

I wanted to showcase progression and common elements, but without making it overly complex. Final touches were done with drop shadow and slow fall off and delay animation, in “tentacles” section, for example.

Final video extract

I can’t show the whole video, as it features POC app and features still in development. However, you can enjoy this short extract from main project below.
